Warrington Historical Society Out & About:

A Day at Barclay Elementary  - Jan 2018

On Friday January 19, 2018, to celebrate John Barclay’s birthday, a few members of the Warrington Historical Society and Warrington Township Historic Commission visited all the second graders at John Barclay Elementary.  We have been doing this for several years and always have a good time. The students are so interested in Warrington’s history and are always so well behaved.

We do a presentation on basic Warrington history and then go over John Barclay’s life. We show them pictures of the Barclay house which is now the Hatboro Federal building, the 10 Folly Rd one room school house and a picture Barclay Elementary the first year it opened.

The favorite part for everyone is the Show and Tell. We explain the artifacts we brought and then the students come up class by class to see and touch them. We have a collection of farm tools, cooking utensils, clothing, pictures, maps and deeds. We enjoy seeing the students’ genuine interest.

Once it is ready for visitors, we hope to have the students visit our 10 Folly Rd School House. It would be a fun experience for them to feel what it would have been like to attend a one room school house with grades 1 to 8 altogether.

The Warrington Historical Society is available to give Warrington History presentations to other groups. Contact us at warringtonhistoricalsociety@gmail.com with your request.

10 Folly Road School House Tour - Oct 2017

In Oct 2017, the WHS provide the Warrington Quester group with a tour of the 10 Folly Road School, and discussed the school house’s history.  The 3 Legacy Oak Quester groups: John Craig’s Tavern, Brown’s Folly and Museum Pieces have been very supportive of our restoration efforts for the County Line Road school house. They’re combined efforts and commitment are to fund our teacher’s platform. We have given presentations to all 3 groups and hosted them for a few visits to the schoolhouse. They even spread the word and “The Explorers” a men’s group from Legacy Oaks, also came for a tour.  Below are some pictures from their October visit. We were able to point out the name Ken found after removing the tile from the bathroom. “Dick Worthington 1946” was on the wall. Dick was the brother of Ada Schlechter who was the owner of the house at that point. Dick was 16 in 1946 and must have been helping his brother-in-law put in the first bathroom in the house.

WHS at Warrington Day  - Sept 2017

Our purpose is to promote Warrington Township's history while preserving and exhibiting its artifacts, photographs and documents.  Warrington Day is the perfect opportunity to do so.  This year, we not only continued our fundraising for the “10 Folly Road School House Restoration”, by selling “William Penn Oak” pens, Warrington History Books, ‘Warrington’ and ‘Warrington Revisited’, and Fine Art Giclee Reproductions of the 10 Folly Road School House and the William Pen Oak but we also met great people:  Matt Weintraub, the District Attorney and the Phillie Phanatic!

WHS Supports the Herb Kahl Memorial Scholarship Fund - Sept 2017

In 1997, to honor Herb Kahl’s memory and his legacy of commitment to the young people of the community, the Warrington Township Board of Supervisors established the Herb Kahl Memorial Scholarship Fund. This fund annually awards scholarships to Warrington residents who have demonstrated their interest and involvement in volunteer services to the community.  Since its inception, many students have had the privilege of receiving financial assistance from this fund to defray some of their college expenses.

In Sept 2017, Mary Doyle Roth and Donne Sempowski happily volunteered at the Herb Kahl Memorial Scholarship Fund 10k run/walk that the township sponsored.
